Temple of Kukulcán

Large, stone pyramid set against a cloudy sky

This towering pyramid served as a temple to the deity Kukulcán, the Yucatec Maya Feathered Serpent. It was built by the Mayans sometime between the 8th and 12th centuries AD.

It has been an experience to view and walk around the various Mesoamerican archaeological sites scattered throughout Mexico. Each region has temples in their own styles, with some similarities shared between them all.

Temple of the Inscriptions

Large stone pyramid structure standing in front lush green trees and blue sky

The ancient Mayan city of Lakamha (Palenque) was a sight to behold today. The stark contrast between the stone pyramids and the lush green jungle surrounding them was powerful to see in person. Add in the rich jungle smells and the sounds of howler monkeys in the near distance made the experience a feast for all of my senses.

Funky street art

Five colourful figures painted on the wall of a stone building

While wandering down a lane way following the Xochimilco Aqueduct, I stumbled upon numerous murals painted on the walls of the stone houses and restaurants. This one is my favourite from the bunch.
